Universal Studios Great Britain Theme Park Granted Planning Permission

In a landmark development for the UK’s tourism and entertainment landscape, the government has officially granted planning permission for Universal Studios Great Britain theme park, paving the way for the country’s first Universal-branded theme park and resort near Bedford, Bedfordshire. This decision, finalised in mid-December 2025, marks a major milestone in a project years in the making and sets the stage for one of the most ambitious leisure developments in UK history.

Green Light Received After Special Government Approval

The planning approval was granted on 16 December 2025 through a Special Development Order (SDO) issued by the UK Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. This approach allowed the project to bypass the usual local planning process and move forward efficiently under central government oversight — reflecting the scale and national significance of the proposal.

The planning permission will officially take effect in January 2026, after a brief parliamentary review period, clearing the way for construction to begin shortly thereafter.

A Transformative Destination

The Universal Studios Great Britain resort is slated to open in 2031, becoming the first of its kind in the UK and one of the largest theme park projects in Europe. Strategically located on the site of the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks just south of Bedford, the development will transform nearly 500 acres of land into a world-class entertainment resort.

Officials project the resort will attract more than 8 million visitors annually, drawing tourists both domestically and internationally. It is also expected to deliver an economic boost of around £50 billion over the long term — a substantial win for local and national economies.

Jobs, Investment and Infrastructure Upgrades

The planning approval isn’t just about rides and attractions — it represents a major economic opportunity for the region. The development is forecast to generate tens of thousands of jobs, with estimates pointing to around 20,000 roles during construction and roughly 8,000 permanent positions once the park becomes operational.

To support the influx of visitors and staff, significant infrastructure investments are planned. These include upgrades to the Wixams railway station, a brand new rail stop on the East West Rail line, enhancements to local roads including direct slip-roads from the A421, and broader connectivity improvements to Bedford and beyond.

What’s Next?

With planning permission secured, Universal Destinations & Experiences — the resort division of Comcast NBCUniversal — will now advance detailed design work and ramp up early site preparation. While specific theming and attractions haven’t been fully revealed, the resort is expected to feature multiple themed lands, immersive rides, entertainment zones, hotels, and a vibrant dining and retail district.

Local leaders have welcomed the news, with Bedford MP Mohammad Yasin calling the decision a “transformational moment” for the region that will bring lasting economic and cultural benefits.
